The warm sunshine might have seemed almost perfect running weather, and a mile might appear to be an easy distance to take on, but imagine attempting that in tidal waters after only 3 or 4 practice sea swims this summer. That is exactly what Scoobie was faced with today (Saturday June 21, 2008) as she took on the Madison Mile Swim, at the Surf Club, Madison.
The event is described as:
This prestigious event attracts hundreds of top-quality swimmers from around the country, and is the fastest open water field in the northeast.
In addition to hosting the USMS National Championship, the Madison Mile is also State Championships for both CT Masters (USMS) and CT Swimming (USA Swimming.)
It is also held in memory of Dave Parcels who was instrumental in establishing the event but tragically died last year.
Scoobie after the race said she’d had a tough time adjusting to the conditions. There was a strong tide running and she reportedly got tangled with one of the buoys! Just like trail races, the distance is a guesstimate because wind and tide can play their part. Last year is was said to be short – no such luck this year and she said several swimmers retired early. But not Scoobie who finished in a time of 1:09:24.
Great job!
