I know I should not “editorialize” on my own quote, but I feel compelled. This quote reminds me of the running philosophy of one of our most inspired, and inspirational Bimblers: IGGY. She often imagines herself as being still on the trail as the earth spins beneath her. In some strange way, this quote seems to be trying to express the same thing. There are definitely some days when I feel “stillness” on the trail, and I mean that in the worst possible way, as in “unmovable”. Then there are other days, like this morning, when I can barely sense any effort as the ground slides by beneath me.
These counter-intuitive statements are frustrating! Forest, do you recall telling me once, while running on the Cockaponsett white trail, that someone told you the secret of running faster was to “touch the ground less often”….maddening I tell you, maddening!! Similarly, the effect of Mr. Bimble’s effortlessness while running is akin to the Christ-like steps of never touching the ground at all!!
Snobody… as the wise old Master Po once imparted wisdom on to his young acolyte Grasshopper in regards to these imponderables: “Have a Guinness”. Right after that, I think he said “Go to (the) Promise(d) Land”
huh… then in your case Forrest we could finish the trail vs road discussion we started… Is that even pertinent here? “stillness on the trail…this morning, when I can barely sense any effort as the ground slides by beneath me.”
Yes Loopy, it is pertinent. In fact, you commented upon how “effortless”, or at least “fluid”, or at the VERY least “quiet” my stride seemed, and we were, to some extent, on a “trail”. The same thing happens to me on the rocks and roots from time to time as well.
ohhhhhhh… I get it… Like as the Oracle once said to me on a solo WW run. ” You become one with the Universe” when you are so focused on the trail that your mind separates from your body and floats above your body and watches every step you take with Grace.

Forrest – you are too kind… this post gets me a little…

Shouldn’t it be….
“Only when
there is movement
in stillness
can the spiritual rhythm
appear which pervades
heaven and earth.”
