Girl Run July 13, 2010
My wish for rain was granted, Ticket promised storms and she delivered… or was it the collective energy the girls generated by meeting in the woods just before dusk, or maybe all of the above?
Guthrie lead us in a reverse route up the hill and into the woods in her usual effortless, bird-like style. We hoped for showers, the ground was saturated but the rain had stopped coming down at the start of our run. As we entered the woods we experienced “the wet leaves dripping on us as if it only rained under the canopy of trees” phenomenon. We “woohhoed” and “hollered” in our primal tongues as we made our way through the trails, the earth so soft under foot, we began to maintain a magical rhythm! And then the skies opened up and it began to POUR!! Woohoo!! We celebrated and enjoyed pagan like cathartic nature rituals. Smudging, synergetic energy and the pure thrill of running like wild animals along single track in the rain were the highlights of my experience tonight. We all enjoyed the rain washing and drenching us as we stood on bridges over creeks allowing the water to wash away the stress of our daily lives.. off our bodies dripping down into the river to be washed away forever further down stream. Very refreshing…We ran along the river and finished up at the skate park where Scoobie threw down some sweet break dance moves in her cool Bimble hat, Shelly Girl left some skin on the ramps I think and I threw down a dozen push ups…oh yeah, Allstate can walk a sweet balance beam routine and a very fast side trail! When is the next Girl Run? Woo-Hoo Giiiiiiiiiiirl Ruuuuuun! Oh, we have an official mascot…. yep – Guthrie made friends with a little frog (or was it a toad?). For the record, not a single girl was willing to kiss the frog.
Thanks for a great time – for the Girls who could not make it – we missed you and we hope you can make it to the next one!!

Iggy (or should I call you ‘runner with no hat’)
Thank you for the report. It was definitely a magical run – almost dark enough for headlamps within the trails. There were so many highlights to recall…The sound of the heavy rain coming down was like the beating of a drum that kept us all moving in step with one another and led us to Ticket’s golden tree. At one point when we came out of the trail, into the light (next to the big castle)Guth discovered the wild Rubus idaeus bushes which gave us sustenance as we made our way back into the trail.
I have, however made a decision NOT to go with my original plan of becoming a skateboarder!
Looking forward to the next one…

Iggy-Loved your description… I had a similarly wonderful, hatless (though less girly!) run in the rain a little earlier than yours at West Rock…so exhilarating to splash through deep puddles, brush by wet leaves, and such wonderful SOUNDS as the rain would shift from moderate to heavy, creating those great moments of anticipation before it filtered down to hit bare shoulders. Count me in for the next one!
