Word about the Bluff 50k seems to be getting around, but from feedback there is a hint that the course is perceived to be flat because it is in Connecticut. Well, I can’t claim that is has mountains or death defying descents but the term “… exactly what you think it isn’t…” really isn’t a bluff!
The route really does have a bit of everything; the early Timberlands section is very rocky and will require lots of concentration. The archery range and Genesee are much more runnable but from the start to the far end of Genesee you are gaining elevation the whole way! On the Mattabasset Trail watch out for those rocks and then enjoy the climb over Bluff Head. From the base to the summit you will climb a steep trail that has a couple of false summits but the views are a spectacular reward for your effort, which believe me you will have earned. As you continue towards the James valley Preserve keep your eyes open, the rocks are unforgiving and the ‘gentle undulations’ will be a constant reminder that this isn’t a flat trail. As you descend towards route 77, the trail teases with switchbacks along the side of a hill, the reason being to offer the hiker views of a water fall that hopefully in the fall will be stunning. On the far side of route 77 yet more ‘undulations’ on a rocky trail before heading into Rockland. The preserve is more runnable but mentally you will feel you are still headed in a direction away from the start yet you have covered nearly 20 miles! From the 4th aid station it is back onto the Mattabasset and a particularly gnarely cobbled section of trail that when wet will do it’s best to become ‘closely’ acquainted with you. Back into Genesee you will be on familiar territory and hey guess what? You’re on the descent! Your return to Timberlands though, will be reminder of what you have accomplished and that the Bluff, “… exactly what you think it isn’t …”
We hope to see you there.

Who believes that the Bluff course is flat? The ‘goat’ loop seems like 3 hours uphill, with 99 out of every 100 steps being categorized as ‘hazardous.’ We have only to recall a recent ‘bite’ where 2 of our most seasoned (and hairy) runners were seriously injured! Just have them sign up & take a bimble in our shoes. We’ll see if they can keep up!

Yeah don’t forget the “hairy guys”
Mr Bimble
Just for clarification, the ‘hairy guys’ are not stars of the Geico commercial, but two dogs that appeared to conclude (correctly) that the quickest descent of Bluff Head was via the cliff face. They survived to tell the tale but any contributions to the BS Veterinary Fund will be greatly appreciated!

I, of the two legged, and usually not hairy, variety Bimbler also took a thrilling fall on the downhill coming toward Route 77 after the Bluff. I got pretty good “hang time” and landed pretty hard onto the only stretch of rock-free trail on the entire course, I think.

That reminds me i also tumbled well ok twice but no one saw the first one !!! While the second i landed also gently into a flat muddy weedy area and couldn’t get up !! So maybe it is flatish
