Yesterday a group of Bimblers went to Colchester, CT to run the Colchester Half Marathon. The race was put on by Rick Konon. Rick wants to run a laid back no frills race (No shirts or medals) to give back to the race the running community who has seen ever increasing entry fees (Hartford Half Marathon, $50 -$70). This year’s entry fee was $12, up from a previous $2. Rick’s wife reminded him that he has small children who might someday want to go to college, so he wanted to try and cover the cost of the race this year. He did put out there, that if anybody thought the entry fee was too high to pay, pay what they felt the race was worth after running it. I’m sure he had no takers. Gretchen, Snobody and I participated in the 40th Annual Tradition Run at Hubbard Park in Meriden today. The race, or un-race, as they call it starts at the base of East Peak in Hubbard Park and winds around a reservoir and up to Castle Craig at the top of East Peak. The way up is approxiametly 5K and you have the option of taking a ride down or making it a 10K. We all ran back down and enjoyed conversation on the much easier return trip. The trip up and down is on roads, but they were snow covered and made for slow going. This is a great place for hill repeats, if you are so inclined. No pun intended. Of the races that I have run over the past few years, Hellgate has to be one of my favorites for reasons that have already been so eloquently voiced by Messrs Bimble and El Toro. The night start, the remote course, the chance of extreme weather: all of these factors add up to ensure that when you finish this one, you know you have pushed yourself as hard as you should ever want to (particularly as it’s only for a bit of fun!).
