Selfishness or Selflessness? Crewing and Pacing in Vermont

It all began in the Promise Land. You know, the one in Virginia. Ultra, myself, and Sandy Beauvis talked on our long trip down to the Promise Land 50K++ about her misadventures with her pacer in last year’s Vermont 100. I believe it was Ultra who said you should pace Sandy at the Vermont 100 this year. If it wasn’t him I’m sure he would have sooner or later, so we’ll leave it at that. Pacing would be new to me, having only to worry about me in a race. I was nervous. To maybe be the difference in somebody’s race, a 100 mile race, good or bad, scared the ***t out of me. While others were enjoying a race on one of my favorite islands, I was having MorFun in the mountains of southern New Hampshire and northern Massachusetts. I had decided to run this week’s Grand Tree race, the MorFun Wapack Trail Race 21 Miler. 2009 Promise Land 50K++ Adventure. Where to start??? Okay how about from the beginning. Our adventure begins Thursday afternoon when I met Ultra at his house in New Haven to give him a ride to the rental car place to get our car for the trip. Presented with a few similar cars to choose from, his only request to me was to not choose the red one because it attracts the police. Northern Nipmuck Trail Race

Race #1 of the Grand Tree series, the Northern Nipmuck Trail Race, was held today. The Mayor and myself were the sole representatives from BimbleLand, but evidence of Mr. Bimble’s reach was evident. Several Bimbler’s Bluff Buffs (Say that 3 times fast) were adorning many runners and one runner asked us how this course compared to the Bimbler’s Bash. Many familiar faces were seen including Charlie Iselin. Otters in Branford!!

Yes Virginia, there are otters in Branford. I saw them today with my very own eyes.

I was in a “I don’t want to run 3 hours today funk”, but I put on my running clothes and told my two older children that I would bring them to school. This got me out of the house and going in the right direction at an early hour. Sadie and I dropped the kids off before 7:30 and headed over to the Van Wie Property of the Branford Land Trust that is over off Red Hill Rd. near Exit 56. Yesterday a group of Bimblers went to Colchester, CT to run the Colchester Half Marathon. The race was put on by Rick Konon. Rick wants to run a laid back no frills race (No shirts or medals) to give back to the race the running community who has seen ever increasing entry fees (Hartford Half Marathon, $50 -$70). This year’s entry fee was $12, up from a previous $2. Rick’s wife reminded him that he has small children who might someday want to go to college, so he wanted to try and cover the cost of the race this year. He did put out there, that if anybody thought the entry fee was too high to pay, pay what they felt the race was worth after running it. I’m sure he had no takers.
