Vestal Virgin’s Virgil
As with my first marathon and 50K (the Bluff), my first 50 miler felt like something that happened to me, rather than something I actively chose. I’ve never had real aspirations to go further than 50K. Yet when Bimblers proposed the appealing Highland Sky 40-miler early this season I decided to run it in spite of the bonus mileage. When I missed a turn at Highland Sky, that 40 miles became almost 45. And, suddenly, it seemed like I was too close to that 50 mile mark NOT to attempt a 50-miler at least once. Vermont, the forgotten memoires
It was my first ultra event of the year. The appeal of road trips to races hasn’t been as strong this year and as a result, prior to the VT100 I had only run three other races, only one of which was over 10k. TCU part two
Two attempts at completing the TCU have fallen short of their intended goal to complete 100 miles from Massachusetts to Guilford with minimal aid via the New England Scenic Trail. Last year the trail after dark, blocked by dense overgrowth, turned me back shortly after Summitwood Road. This time around, I called it a day at route 71, a little before then. Perspective: not quite sure when I lost it, but it’s gone and has been gone for a long time. If you are on the Bimblers Sound website reading this, then chances are that you too were separated from yours a while ago.
How do I know? In preparation for the Pikes Peak trail marathon next month, I decided to go to Vernon, New Jersey this past Saturday and run a few hills.
