Registration for the 7th annual Bimbler’s Bash is now open. Last year we received over 300 registrations making this event the biggest trail race in Connecticut! All proceeds are given to the Guilford Land Conservation Trust. This year’s event will take place on April 7, 2013 at 9:00am at Cox School, 143 Three Mile Course, Guilford, CT 06437.

Ten years ago a race captivated my interest. It offered the prospective of running through the night at the mercy of winter weather and for the first running of the event the conditions were spectacular. I can’t recall the exact temperatures at the time, but packed snow covered the ground and a crystal clear sky ensured they stayed low. Overhead a full moon and sparkling stars shone brightly. The hilly course is tough enough, but the unpredictable aspect of the elements provides a dimension that gives participants who normally finish further down the pack, a competitive edge if they are able to adapt to the dark and temperature extremes. Please forgive me for my lack of detail in location on the trail. The trail was beautiful on this day and everything looked very similar.
I had not run a 50k in almost 9 year and when I told family and friends I was going to run another the responses were anywhere from, “A 50k, is that real?” to “OMG are you crazy?”. I have to say, it always sounds crazy but the experience is always satisfying and an eye opener. My focus was just to finish (using this run as a training run, in preparation for a few more ultras within next 6 months), test calorie intake, and blister prevention. Congratulations to Phil Shea and Melanie Murphy-Arnold overall winners of this year’s Bluff 50K. One hundred and thirty eight finishers enjoyed warm bright Fall sunshine for the fifth running of this event. The field included Jay Avitable, Joe Laskey and Brian Loose who have finished all five!
